The Do's and Don'ts of Valentines Day ~ Ladies Edition

I was going to write about what men should do for their ladies on Valentine's Day, and then it hit me.  This whole site is about weddings, and "girlie" topics so it isn't likely that a man will be reading this.  However, Valentine's Day is a two-way street so here is the alternative: The Do's and Don'ts of Valentine's Day ~ Ladies Edition 1. What Wedding? Going out on a limb to bet that you have been talking wedding pretty much since he proposed, so number one on the list is to not talk about the wedding AT ALL! That's right, no talking about the wedding on Valentine's Day because you can't forget about the things you used to talk about and enjoy doing together before the wedding planning began.  Remind him of your sense of humor, and your spontaneity.

2.  The Key to His Heart Plan a dinner at a low key restaurant, somewhere that HE feels comfortable.  Flip the switch and pay the bill, a guy likes to be wined and dined once and awhile!  If you know your way around the kitchen, then whip out that family recipe and enjoy the evening together without having to deal with the crowds in town.

3.  It's The Little Things That Count Make a basket of his favorite items such as: - Favorite Coffee - His Favorite Jerky, or Snacks, Sweets etc - Sports/Hobby related such as a hat or t-shirt - Tickets to an upcoming event such as the races, sports game - Action Movies, Books or a CD These things may not sound like much but it shows him that you pay attention to even the small things that he enjoys

4.  Day Trip While not everyone can take the day off for Valentines Day, consider planning a weekend trip or day trip a few days later.  You can give him a card with a few hints about what you have planned over the weekend.   We are lucky in California to have so many natural beauties at our fingertips, so you don't have to spend a fortune on activities. Pack up your bikes or hiking shoes and just enjoy the outdoors together.

5. Royal Treatment Before you think you yourself that your guy would never step foot in a salon, keep in mind their are some easy alternatives to this.  Give the ultimate royal treatment with a couples massage, if you don't think you could talk him into going to a salon then bring the salon to him.  A mobile massage therapy company can come to your house and possibly even give you some pointers on technique for massage so that you know how to work out the knots yourself.

What do you think the ultimate gift is for your guy? Share your ideas or comments here!

Budgeting and The Elusive "Average"

As wedding coordinators we meet with couples who may be planning a very intimate wedding of 40 people or under, or on the other hand couples who are trying to keep the guest list under 300.  After the engagement is official and the couple begins making selections for their venue and vendors, it becomes a question of where to start.  There are many tools and checklists that are helpful, and we offer our assistance for every step of the way during the planning process even if a couple books us for Day of Coordination vs. Full Service.    The biggest question that I hear brides ask is "what is the average cost of _________?" The reason this question isn't always easy to answer is because there are many variables to cost, therefore the photographer or venue for one wedding may not be comparable to another event due to some of these reasons: ♥ Location ♥ Time of Year ♥ No. of Expected Guests ♥ Specific Package Selections ♥ Demand for Service/Product ♥ Level of Experience of Vendor

Watching the Wedding Programs on TV or flipping through a magazine may have skewed your grasp of what a realistic budget is in your area.  While it is important to understand what is realistic, it is even more important to establish your budget based on what you feel comfortable with.  Even if a $2k floral budget is average in some areas, it may not be a number that you can or want to spend for your event.

When clients contact us, we ask them to complete a questionnaire and rate what the most important areas of their budget is.

We ask questions such as:

From 1 -5 in importance (1 being most important) rate the following:

  • Abundance of Fresh Flowers
  • Extensive Photography and/or Videographer Package (over 6-8 hours of photography and printed images in album)
  • Luxury Linens, Centerpieces & Decor
  • Venue
  • Food & Beverage

If budget was no option we would splurge on: a. Gourmet Food & Premium Drinks for our guests b. Chandeliers, Draping & Up lighting c. Modern Furniture & Lounge areas d. Gift Baskets /Custom Favors e. An over the top Wedding Cake f. Custom Stationary (Invitations, Save The Dates, etc) g. Other(s) ______________________

These types of questions give us insight on helping you establish your budget, and pair you with vendors that can not only provide the products and services you are looking for but also stay on budget.  We can assist clients prioritize the expenses so that all of the major areas are covered and we can identify some of the "extras" to have on standby if budget permits.

We support the DIY Couples in their projects and creativity, and can even help you budget for your DIY projects to estimate your savings and cost effectiveness for each project.  Our goal for the DIY couple is to help you organize all of the projects and elements that you have worked on creating, and put them together into a smooth timeline with tasks and detailed information to keep everyone on the same page.  If you would like information on our packages, or our upcoming DIY Workshop please shoot us an email at info@The530Bride.com

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Thomas

Brandy & Brian were married on March 17th, 2012 (Yep St. Patricks Day!)  To catch a glimpse of this couple's fun loving personalities just check out their engagement session, photographed by Emily Heizer Photography.  Their engagment session included a sunrise session in the blooming almond orchards in Durham, and they also incorporated their passion for baseball into their shoot which is now one of my favorite E-Session themes! From my first consultation with Brandy, I could tell she had a distinct vision for her wedding day and she was able to not only incorporate all of the elements that she wanted; but she was able to tie them all together cohesively which isn't always easy.  Her wedding vision: Barn Wedding, Fabric Draping, Uplighting, Burlap Runners, Mismatched Cutlery & Dishes, Mixed Herbs & Greenery, Twine & Lace accents.

See for yourself, this wedding was breathtaking! I really enjoyed working with Brandy & Brian and couldn't be happier to share some of my snapshots from their day!

Ponderosa Ridge Ranch was the couple's wedding venue, and the ranch was the perfect setting for their rustic chic event.

The Ponderosa Ridge Ranch features a lovely barn for events, as well as a grassy patio area. Brandy & Brian obtained the measurements for the barn and chose an ivory colored fabric for draping the room.  We brought an extension ladder and a staple gun, and viola! With the vaulted ceiling, the draping really added an elegant touch.

The couple chose cracker jacks for their wedding favors, which tied into their love of baseball. Name tags were tied onto each box using twine, helping guests find their place at their assigned tables.

This DIY chandelier made from a Manzanita Branch was a show stopper!

The weather was unpredictable, so it was decided to hold the ceremony indoors and to turn the room over during the cocktail hour. On the night of the rehearsal dinner there were some heavy rains, but luckily the sun came out on the big day.  Before the ceremony, Brandy & Brian had their "First Look Photo's and also took pictures with their wedding party & family members. To see their first look photos click here! After the ceremony, it was time for Brandy & Brian to step out for photos as husband and wife. Check out some additional photos here. A special thanks goes out to all of the vendors who contributed to such a wonderful day, and it was a pleasure working with you all!

What You Should Know Before You Book..

In our daily lives we are consumers of everything from the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the phones we use to communicate, the cars we drive and the list goes on.  We have the freedom to choose the products, companies and services that we want to use and there are many different factors that lead us to this decision.  You may purchase products based on only the price, the packaging, brand name recognition, or a referral from a friend.  These same factors apply when you are looking for products and services for your wedding. Even at a time when we have the internet at our fingertips, word of mouth is still the most valuable referral.  Hearing or even reading another customers first-hand experience with a business can give you insight on what you can expect.  If you read several reviews that a business has repeatedly delivered rental items late, or in bad condition you should consider this a red flag and proceed with caution.  To be fair, one bad review can be situational so you shouldn't rule them out based on that.

I recently came across a business online that boasted the cheapest rental rates and fastest service, it seemed too good to be true.  It was when I read at least 20 reviews from customers who all had very similar experiences with this company that I saw the business had repeatedly left customers scrambling to find replacement rental items just days or even hours before their event.  It was sad to think how much time, energy & money these customers could have saved by looking into the companies reputation.

Some vendors will provide a list of recent customers that you can contact to ask about their experience and satisfaction with the service.  This can be helpful if you are considering multiple vendors and are on the fence about which one to choose.  Websites such as Yelp,  WeddingWire, and TheKnot are just a few of the resources you can use to research local vendors.

If you really want to thank your vendors for doing a great job, offer to write a testamonial about your great experience working with them, and refer friends and family to use their products or services as well.    I have had the pleasure of meeting so many reputable and hard-working businesses in our area who strive to give you the service above and beyond your expectations.   Did you find a website helpful for reading reviews? Share the website here to help others who are also in their planning stages.

Happy Planning!

The Rehearsal Dinner

The rehearsal dinner may sneak up on you if you aren't careful, how to avoid this? Planning!  These days the lines are blury on who pays for what, so try to address this with your families early on so that you do not have any surprises.  The in-laws may, or may not be planning on taking care of the rehearsal dinner, but do what you can to keep it affordable and organized.  Here are some questions to start with: Does your wedding/reception venue include your rehearsal time within your contract? Many venues are booked solid, so you may not be able to rehearse your ceremony on-site the night before.  Easy fix? If all of your wedding party members live in town, ask your wedding planner to set up another site visit earlier on in the week or month so that you can take photos and get familiar with the layout.  If this will be difficult to arrange, ask your wedding coordinator to assist you in creating a floor plan or layout that you can easily refer to when giving your wedding party the breakdown of where they will be entering from, and where to line up.  You can still practice walking down the aisle, even if it is just in your backyard!

Does your caterer offer rehearsal dinner packages? If your caterer has a restaurant or storefront they may have the option to hold your rehearsal dinner function in their facility.  Some caterers that have on-site banquet halls may offer affordable rehearsal dinner packages for their clients.  This could be anything from simple taco bars, pasta and/or salad bar, or tri-tip and chicken buffet.  It doesn't hurt to ask!

Which nearby restaurants or venues can accommodate rehearsal dinners? If you have a favorite restaurant or know of one that has a large banquet room, call ahead to inquire about reserving the space.  Make sure to ask if there is any special pricing available for large groups, and if there are any menu limitations due to the number of people.  Many restaurants will opt for a special menu that offers family-style servings, taco bars, or platters to simplify ordering and keeping cost down.

Are +1's in our budget? If your bridesmaid has asked if her boyfriend can come along for the rehearsal dinner, you will need to make sure that you can accommodate this in your budget.  Not sure how to say no?  Politely explain that this time is for the wedding party and family members only, to spend time together and to also keep costs down.

Backyard Rehearsal Dinner Many couples are opting for the backyard rehearsal dinner not only to keep the cost down, but to also create more of a casual environment and make the most of the time you have to visit with your friends and family before your big day.  This is a great time to have your family members participate by bringing side dishes, or consider hiring a caterer to serve the meal in your home.  The cost of renting tables and chairs may be less than eating out, so it is a great option if you and your fiance are paying for your rehearsal dinner.

Have a sticky situation with your rehearsal dinner plans? Ask The 530 Bride!
